Forgiveness: A Key to Healing

People hurt each other. It happens to everyone. Intentionally, unintentionally, regretfully or not. It’s a part of what we do as people. The beauty is that we have the ability to heal and forgive.

-Adi Alsaid

There’s a saying that  forgiveness isn’t for the other person, it is for yourself.

So why does it feel like it is so hard to forgive sometimes?

When someone hurts you or does you wrong, it’s natural to get sad or angry.

And sometimes those are the hard emotions to cope with.

It’s hard to forgive when you are in an emotional state. Because the emotion clouds your vision.

And the thought of what that person did or said just keeps replaying in your head. And though you may want to forgive, you just can’t forget.

So you let the emotion take control and you prolong the healing process, because well, it’s just not that easy to forget.

And if you can’t forget you can’t truly forgive because forgiveness is wiping the slate clean.

So how is it that forgiveness is for yourself when it takes all the effort from you?

Some of us are holding onto unforgiveness from years ago for people who we may not even see or talk to anymore.

But we can’t allow ourselves to live in unforgiveness.

It’s like a festering wound that won’t heal because we keep picking the scab off of it.

You have to forgive and forget. That way you don’t keep peeling back the scab and ultimately only hurting yourself and prolonging your own healing.

The best part of forgiveness is when you can finally forget and finally be free.

Forgiveness isn’t for the other person, it’s for yourself.

So if there’s anyone that you are holding unforgiveness in your heart towards, try to work on forgiving them.

I’m finding in my own life it is the key to my healing.

  1. This is so true. Even when we forgive we don’t forget which like you said prolongs the healing process and causes you to build a wall against not only that person but others because you don’t want that same thing happening again. So even though it is tough we do have to forgive and forget for ourselves and prevent ourselves from shutting potentially good people out of our lives.
